High Altitude, HMTC, Hike, Prep End, Funny, Staff Meeting, Head Gear, Liver Stuff

These past 10 days things have slowed down a bit.  Sarah finished Weber State Prep.  She had her closing ceremony last week.  We met at the park and she was able to show me the different things she worked on in her 4 classes--Problem Solving, Algebraic Structures, Physics, Career Awareness/homeroom.  The closing ceremony was for years 1 and 2.  It was fun to look over the displays and talk to Sarah about them.  We even got to see her cousin Miles with my brother Bryan and his wife Michonne.  Sarah and Miles weren’t in the same cohort, but they were in the same year which was fun.  Here’s Sarah and her friend showing us some things they worked on:
Here’s Sarah getting her Certificate of Achievement for completing year 2 of WSU Prep:
Wahoo!!
They also showed some different pictures the photographer took throughout their 6 weeks of classes.  I found a few with Sarah in them:

Here’s all the students in years 1&2:
Sarah’s cohort or class group:
Sarah is looking forward to year 3 which is the last year for Prep and is hoping that will be in person instead of virtual next summer.  We are keeping our fingers crossed!

Josh got his mission plaque put up in the missionary cabinet at church:
Home MTC is going well.  Josh is really liking his district.  Most of them will not being going to Chicago, but other Spanish speaking missions.  However, Josh says they get along great which is good to hear.  Here’s a picture of most of them during a Zoom lesson:
Josh’s companion is from Colorado.  He will be going to Chicago with Josh so that’s great that they will at least know each other when they get out there.
In addition to his daily HMTC Zoom classes he gets the chance to attend some extra workshops about different topics that might help him on his mission.  He had one workshop yesterday which was available to all MTC missionaries.  An interesting thing is that he got paired up with another Home MTC sister that is five houses down from us who is going to Georgia Armenia Mission speaking the Georgian language on her mission.  The odds of that are crazy small, but interesting none the less!!
Josh thought it was pretty cool to see Sister Saddler in his 3 person breakout room.  They are both doing Home MTC right now, however, she has been doing home MTC about a month longer than Josh has.  She introduced Josh to her companion and told her that he was her neighbor, but they were both doing Home MTC at the same time.
Josh was so used to being on the go before he started his mission, that he gets a bit stir crazy sitting in a room downstairs and staring at the iPad all day.  He does get a 10 minute break in-between classes and he will come upstairs and tell us about what he is learning.  I am enjoying hearing about that.  However, he does get an hour break for lunch so he will quickly eat something and I will bring him along with me to the grocery store just to get him out of the house for a few minutes.  In the evenings when his classes are done he will come upstairs and we have to turn off the TV since he shouldn’t watch it.  Instead we have been watching Book of Mormon videos.  We have also been playing some family board games.  Aaron has also had us watch some of the missionary videos he used on his mission.  We also have watched a few missionary safety videos as well.  Even though Josh is doing the Home MTC we, as his family, are participating along with him when he is out of class.

However, since everyone is home things are not always quiet.  Josh is tucked away downstairs in the basement with the door closed, however, when my kids fight oh I mean have 'spirited discussions' Josh can hear them.  When they get too ‘spirited' he will message this meme to all of us to tell us to quiet things down.
Ugh!!!  We try to be quiet, but life with kids all at home during the summer isn’t quiet--haha!

I found this meme and it is pretty close to the truth.  I am the out of gas person and Aaron is the keep the tank more than half full person.  However, I have NEVER ran out of gas before, but I think I came the closest I have ever come to running out of gas last week.  Luckily, I did make it to the gas station on fumes before it ran dry.  I had less than a mile to go until I ran out of gas--glad I made it--haha!  Aaron was not amused.
Now that Josh is out of commission and Daniel was out of town last week, Sarah finally talked Noah into learning how to mow the lawn because she didn’t want to mow the front and back lawn by herself.  She was patient with him and taught him how to do everything.  He mowed the whole backyard by himself.  Wahoo!  Aaron and I only have about 6 more years of cheap yard care (disguised as chores) left before the kids move out and we will have to do it ourselves.  We need to take utmost advantage of those 6 years--haha!
Daniel was out of town last week because he was at High Altitude Camp with the Cross Country team.  They left early Monday morning and drove up to Red Castle to camp for the week.  During that week they ran and ran and ran.  They ran over 50 miles in those 5 days.  They did two workouts a day at roughly 9300 feet elevation.  The second to last day they did a grueling 24 mile run/hike out to Upper Red Castle.  The next day they did a morning workout, packed up and came back home.  Daniel wasn’t very excited to go to High Altitude Camp, but he had a great time.  The kids on the Cross Country Team are all good kids and very friendly.  He came home exhausted, but proud of his accomplishment.
Here’s some pictures from their trip:
They all made it to Upper Red Castle Lake which is an elevation of roughly 11,400 feet.

Daniel was so glad to come home and have a warm shower and sleep in a bed again, though.

Matthew has been so excited for his birthday coming up.  He will be turning 20!!  His old high school teacher contacted me and asked if she could take him out to lunch.  She took him to McDonald’s and Matthew absolutely LOVED it.  I love that she stays in touch with him and enjoys seeing him so often!  Matthew always keeps things interesting.....last week he went for a walk around his group home.  He has an approved route that does not take him further than a half mile from his house at any point.  However, it has been hot.  He went on a walk and ran out of water.  Instead of going home and getting another drink, he got really worried he would get dehydrated.  His cell phone is a specialized one that will only call numbers that we program into it.  It is so locked down that he can’t even dial 911 from his cell phone.  Anyway, he got himself so worked up and worried about getting dehydrated that he went up to a passerby and talked them into calling 911 for him.  DOH!!  When he got home to his group home he got in trouble.  They let us know what happened.  All you can do is sigh and then try to explain to him what a real emergency is.  However, we have had this exact conversation before and obviously it doesn’t sink in as much as we hope it does.  Good thing we love him!!

Josh has to have a companion with him whenever he leaves the house.  He has wanted to go running in the mornings, but Daniel was gone all last week.  I can’t keep up with Josh.  I told him if he wants to run with me he would have to do 18 minute miles.  He was not happy about that.  However, we came up with a compromise.  We got up early 6 am-ish and headed to the high school track.  He ran on the track while I walked.  On his run he also ran up and back down the stairs on the bleachers to up his workout.  Here was just after sunrise and if you look close you can see Josh running up the stairs on the bleachers:
He hates running on a track, but it is better than exercising at home--at least that is what he said.

We got some new shampoo for Sophie.  When I went to use it on her I read the instructions and thought they were pretty hilarious.  They are funny because it is true!!  Read the highlighted part for yourself--haha!
Saturday was Josh’s P-day.  He had all day until 6 pm.  He did not want to sit at home so we went out.  Sarah was at a friend’s house so it was just Josh, Aaron, Noah and me.  We went on the Car Graveyard hike up Farmington Canyon.  Noah was all energy at the beginning of the hike.  Here he is while the rest of us were going slow and steady.

However, as the hike went on Noah lost his pep and slowed way down.  I kept up with Josh while Aaron fell back with Noah.
Josh and I made it to the first wrecked car:
We did find the second wrecked car.  Josh and Noah went down to check it out:
As the hike went on there was some weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth.  This meme summed up some of what we were experiencing--haha!
But you would never know it from the pictures--haha!

Here’s the 3rd wrecked car we made it to:
The view was great except for the haziness.  There are a bunch of wildfires around Utah so it has made our air pretty hazy.
Josh was glad to get out of the house and do something physical.

Noah finished his summer enrichment/school last week.  He enjoyed the schedule and seeing his friends again.  He also got his headgear Monday.  He is supposed to wear it for 12 hours a day.  He won’t have to wear it to school, but he does have to wear it during sleep.  He had a rough first few nights trying to get used to it, but I think he is doing better.  He doesn’t like it, but if he wears it like he’s supposed to, hopefully, he won’t need to wear it for long.
This week Daniel went running with Josh one morning.  However, he did NOT want to get up at 6 am again the next day so I went with Josh to the track again.  It is always nice to see the sun rise:
Since Josh is doing home MTC I have cut back my working hours during those 6 weeks.  I am still working, but not as much as I have been.  However, yesterday we had our first in person staff meeting with the Core staff.  We met down at Thanksgiving Point for 3 hours.  We had a catered lunch which was yummy.  Then afterward we had a work social at the Butterfly Biosphere.  It was really nice to see everyone in person after being apart for so long!  The butterflies were awesome to see, too!

This one was about the size of two fists--it was HUGE!!

Here’s a feeding station that was full of butterflies:
It was super hot and humid inside the biosphere so my hair was extra poofy and frizzy.  However, I still enjoyed myself!  I still can’t believe we are gearing up for flu season!!That is crazy!!
On my way home from Thanksgiving Point I got a call from Primary Children’s Liver Clinic.  Sarah got her labs drawn two weeks ago and her levels have really gone up--ALT, AST, and GGT.  Since she hasn’t been sick (which if she had been sick would explain the spike in levels) they were concerned.  They asked to do some more  blood testing.  They did a Hepatitis panel which all came back negative which is GOOD, but still doesn’t explain why her liver levels are high.  Her autoimmune markers for Primary Biliary Cholangitis came back negative, but she can still have PBC not having those markers ever turning up positive.  One interesting thing they did call me about was that her hepatitis B titer came back negative.  That means that even though she has had all her hepatitis B vaccines, she never gained an immunity to it.  She did gain an immunity from the Hepatitis A vaccine series so I have no idea why the Hepatitis B series vaccine didn’t take?! The Liver Clinic asked me to call her pediatrician and start the Hepatitis B vaccine 3 shot series over again.  Even though her risk of getting Hepatitis B is extremely LOW they still want her to be immune.  If anyone with a compromised liver can get a vaccine to prevent something from damaging it in the future they want them to get that.  Anyway, she got her first round shot of the Hepatitis B series this morning.  It is a 3 shot series so she will get two more shots over the next 6 months:
She is getting her elastography done next week and will be seeing the liver doctor right after her elastography.  When they did call me to let me know her levels and they were concerned, they also mentioned they might want to do another liver biopsy.  The doctor will talk more about it with me at the appointment, but I am hoping she won’t need to do that again....I guess we will know more next week.

Also when I am not home the kids get wrapped up in whatever they are doing and don’t always pay attention to the dog.  As I walked in from the garage I was greeted with Sophie up on the bathroom sink, Daniel hopping on one foot and a Sophie poop that had been stepped on/smeared by Daniel.  Since no one paid attention to Sophie all day, she never was let outside to go potty.  She can only hold it for so long until she can’t.  Daniel, unfortunately being barefoot, found where she did her business.  EWWWW!  Luckily, it was on the tile so it wasn’t hard to clean up with a ton of sanitizing spray and a bunch of paper towels.  That wasn’t the most fun thing to come home too--haha!  Next time they might pay a bit more attention to Sophie while I am gone--haha!

Speaking of Sophie she is always close by when any food is involved--haha!  Here she is staring at Sarah while she is eating something.
Sophie is also a velcro dog.  Wherever you are she is there, too and she’s not afraid to make herself comfortable.  Here it looks like she has forgotten how to dog trying to get comfortable.  What a weird dog!!
Our garden is really starting to produce.  Sarah and Noah went and picked everything that was ripe this afternoon and there was a TON of stuff.
A shirtful from Noah:
An armful from Sarah:
Needless to say we are having bacon wrapped Anaheim poppers for dinner tonight with some fresh salsa and cucumbers. YUM!!
Aaron dropped his white car off to be fixed after his car accident and was told it should only take two days to fix.  Two days have turned into 10, but hopefully it will be done tomorrow.  In the meantime he has this rental car he’s been driving.
Interesting thing is that it has Idaho license plates.  Oh well.  Aaron will be glad to have his car back soon and so will I!

That’s all that is new with us.  Until next time!!

Missionary, Floating, SeaQuest, Blessing, Dance, Temple, Labs, Medical Exams, High Altitude Camp, Car Accident, Parade, Photo Contest

Since the 4th of July was on a Sunday this year, it meant Aaron got Monday off from work to celebrate.  Sunday evening Daniel got to receive his Patriarchal Blessing.  It was an awesome experience to be there when it was given to him.  He has some amazing things he will get to experience throughout his life!!  Later that evening we did have G&G T over for dinner.  We had hamburgers and they were yummy.  It was nice to visit as well!  The next morning I had won some tickets to Sea Quest Aquarium that we needed to use.  Since we got in for free I splurged and we did a bird encounter where we hand fed the birds.  Aaron sat this activity out since he HATES birds, but the rest of us joined in and it was pretty fun!  Here’s Matthew with a bird on his shoulder:
Aaron is outside the enclosure, but the rest of us are on the inside hand feeding the birds:
We had fun touring the rest of SeaQuest.  The kids got to feed the chickens:
Pet a pig:
Watch the otters swim:
The otters also chirped at us for some food:

Watching the turtles swim:

Watching the tropical fish swim:

Touching the tortoise:
Looking at the chameleon:
We got to see the sloth slowly move around:
The kids liked learning about the African Grey parrot:
Checking out the iguana:
Fish manicure:
Photo ops that can’t be missed--haha:
Matthew was not interested in posing in this photo op, but he was there!
Afterward we went out for lunch and shared some sushi.  It was pretty tasty!

Our garden is really starting to produce.  We picked a huge grocery sack full of Anaheim and jalapeño peppers yesterday.  I guess we will be having pepper poppers for dinner tonight!
Josh had a bunch of missionary safety videos he had to watch before he started his Home MTC.  It was pretty common to see him sitting around watching the videos on his phone:
Sarah had a performance at a care center.
Here’s all her teammates after the performance:
Josh and Daniel have gotten pretty close this past year. I think Daniel will really miss Josh when he leaves.
The other morning we went out and did some Pickleball.

Then we went to park to hang out for a bit. Sarah ended up just reading her book under the tree instead.  She is such a bookworm!!
Josh got his missionary tags in the mail last week.  He had to try them on as soon as he got them out of the envelope!  I have been in a bit of denial that he will be starting his mission soon.  This made it a bit more real for me.  I am happy for him, but a bit sad for me.  Looking good Elder Mancil!

Josh’s friend made him a really cute missionary pillowcase:
A few weeks ago Josh finally was able to go through the temple to receive his endowment.  We were looking forward to this appointment, however, with any visit to the temple it never is without problems.  As we were getting ready to go that morning we didn’t have time to iron.  Well let’s be real, we don’t hardly ever iron--who has time for that?!  Anyway, we just throw the wrinkled clothing item in the dryer to steam out the wrinkles.  Aaron threw his white shirt and suit pants/coat in to get the wrinkles out, however, when he pulled them out there were brown spots everywhere.   DOH!  We had no idea what it was, we just knew that he couldn’t wear that shirt anymore.  He tried throwing in another white shirt when the same thing happened.  When he was pulling his suit pants out is when a forgotten chocolate bar he had gotten the previous week fell out of his pocket--DOUBLE DOH!!  Aaron has a total of two white shirts that fit him and a possible 3rd in a pinch.  Once we figured out it was the melted chocolate bar causing all the brown spots over everything we wiped out the dryer.  I then got to work sponging off the brown spots on his suit.  Luckily, he has a black suit so the spots weren’t as noticeable, but he sure smelled nice.   MMMMM chocolate--haha!  The bad thing was we were already running behind schedule when this happened.  A few others things didn’t go as planned that morning and it was a rough start.  I told Josh this seems to happen whenever you try to go to the temple.  As the morning went on all of us got pretty snippy with each other so it wasn’t the best way to start out a temple trip, but, thankfully, we did make it to the temple in one piece even with a few extra brown spots to boot--haha!  Here’s what Aaron’s shirt looked like when it got ‘wrinkle released’ in the dryer with a forgotten chocolate bar in a pocket:
His suit looked similar, but I sponged most of the chocolate spots off.

Anyway, here’s Josh and Aaron getting ready to go inside the Ogden Temple:

We were grateful for everyone that was able to come to the Saturday morning endowment session with us.  We had the whole session just for our family which was really awesome.  Here’s some after pictures:
G&G T:

I am still in a bit of denial that my baby will be leaving soon!

After the temple we had everyone over for lunch.  We did a hot dog bar along with chips and cookies which was pretty tasty.  Aaron cooked the hot dogs then you could top them with whatever you wanted.  We had a recipe for a Sonoran Dog, Chicago Dog, an American Dog, Chili Dog, and a Potpourri Dog.

Later that evening we met up with the Einzingers and watched our city celebration days come to a close with a fireworks show:
After that first temple experience Josh was a bit overwhelmed.  Thankfully, we were able to go again for an endowment session the following Tuesday.  It was more familiar and comforting experience for Josh that second time.  In getting ready for his Home MTC experience I gathered some church art to hang on the walls.  Josh saw the stuff I had and then asked for a temple picture.  I looked, but temple pictures were either too expensive or too far away.  So after the second endowment session Josh and I took some pictures of the Ogden Temple ourselves to hang on the wall.  We were there in the evening and got to take some pictures of the temple around sunset.  Here’s a few of the ones we got between our phones:

I printed out one of the pictures to hang up downstairs.  It’s kind of cool to know that that particular picture is one that got taken after a personal visit there!

We were also able to squeeze in a Sealing session Thursday evening as well.  It is nice being able to attend the temple again after it got shut down due to Covid!

In getting Josh ready to start his mission he had a dentist visit.  Thankfully no cavities!!  He also had an eye exam.  Luckily, his prescription hasn’t changed much so his old glasses will still work great!  We will order him some new glasses so he will have two pair just in case something happens to one of them.  Here’s the eye exam:
He also had a virtual neurology visit.  I thought it would be a quick visit since nothing has changed, but I was a bit wrong in that assumption.  We weren’t able to get a visit with his regular neurologist so we got one with a nurse practitioner.  She read over his chart.  She then brought up the topic of genetic testing since Josh and Aaron have epilepsy.  She said it might be a good idea to get it checked out just in case there is something in the genes.  I was intrigued and thought it would be a good idea as well.  She sent out the kit and we got it.  He finally found some time to fill out the forms and collect the saliva today.  We sent it off at lunchtime.  It will be interesting to see the results.  Here’s the kit before we mailed it:
After talking about the genetic testing she also wanted to do a virtual neurologic exam.  What?!  My house was messy, so, when she asked Josh to turn the camera so she could see him do some different neurology checks/exercises I was mortified.  There were piles of laundry and clutter in the background.  DOH!!  Oh well, what can you do?!  He passed the neuro check and won’t need another follow up for a year unless there are any issues.  I am hoping we don’t have any issues, but I am keeping my fingers crossed!!  The mission medical person from Salt Lake that is over Josh’s mission called me a few months ago to learn more about Josh.  He did tell me that even with people who have been stable with meds, they can have some breakthrough seizures when they get out in the field since it can be more stressful and such a different routine/structure to get used to.  I am hoping Josh has a smooth transition and everything stays hunky dory!!

Speaking of exams, it was time for Daniel to get a physical done for Cross Country.  We were able get in with his pediatrician on short notice.  Daniel came home from Cross Country practice and told me he needed to get a physical done in the next two days.  WHAT?!?  Don’t you love last minute things like that?!  Anyway, amazingly his pediatrician’s PA had an opening so we took it.  He did great, but had to get his second Gardasil shot which he wasn’t happy about.  He HATES shots or needles of any type so he made me stop by and get him some Chick-Fil-A on the way home--haha!
It was also time for Sarah to get her labs done again.  We are getting to know the phlebotomists pretty well.  They like to talk about the different books they have read since they last saw each other.  Luckily, they got Sarah with the first stick which is great!
In between all this chaos I have still been trying to work.  It has really been crazy this last 6 weeks!  I thought summer would be a nice break, but it hasn’t been much of a break.  I am hoping things will slow down the last half of the summer, but I am not so sure.....

Daniel left for High Altitude Camp this morning with the Cross Country team.  It is where they camp at about 9400 in elevation for 5 days.  They do multiple runs and workouts all day.  In their downtime they get to hang out, fish, paddle board/kayak, play games, etc.  The day before they leave they go on a 22 mile trail run out to Red Castle which is an elevation of 11,295 feet.  This whole camp is to get them prepped for the upcoming season.  Since Daniel had two weeks of summer driver’s ed and another 9 days of vacation (at sea level), he has not been running daily like he should have been all along.  He was really nervous to go on this camp, but I think he will be okay even if he is a bit out of shape.  Here he is as I dropped him off this morning:

They are completely out of cell service range so I can’t text him to see how things are going, but Josh always enjoyed himself at high altitude camp.  I am hoping it is a good experience for Daniel.  If anything he will come back in great shape--haha!

Sarah is still doing Weber STate Prep.  She had a fun field trip last week.  They met at the indoor climbing wall.  They played capture the flag on the rock wall while wearing their harnesses.  Sarah had a lot of fun! She will be finishing up with Prep this week, though.

Noah started a summer enrichment class at his school last week.  It is a daily 3 hour class where they work  on robotics, math puzzles, lego challenges, etc.  He is liking it which I am glad for.

Matthew switched day program groups.  He was nervous about the change, but I think he will do better with the new group since there are no wheelchairs and will have easier mobility when they are out in the community.

I asked Josh what was one thing he wanted to do before he started his mission.  He requested floating the river.  Aaron found a fun route on the Provo river.  We decided to go last Friday.  After checking in we got our life jackets and hitched a ride on the bus to the beginning.
We had a lot of fun floating down the river.

The views were pretty!
Luckily, Aaron and Noah got to use a double tube so Noah got to have some help with steering.

After we were done we stopped by and checked out Bridal Veil Falls:
We then went over to BYU campus.  Aaron and I had to stop by our ‘vent’.  We dated over the winter and both our apartments were so loud and crazy.  We ended up going on campus and sitting on top of this warm vent and talked for hours.  We had to stop by and Aaron gave me a kiss while we were there:
Aaron wanted to stop by the athletics building to look at the sports memorabilia:
We then walked over to see the Museum of Art:

They had a special exhibit featuring the artist Vik Muniz:
Afterward we stopped by and got some yummy Cookies and Cream milk from the bookstore and enjoyed it outside:
We had a really fun day.  I am glad we were able to squeeze in a float on the river with Josh!

Aaron hasn’t had the best of luck, lately.  He got in a fender bender accident last week. DOH!!  Unfortunately, it was his fault.  We have an appointment to get the car fixed this upcoming Tuesday.  I am just glad no one was hurt except the car:
He also split his favorite shorts.  He has had these a few years and the fabric was getting worn out from being washed so much.  They finally gave up on Saturday.  Aaron didn’t know they had ripped until I happened to notice them when he turned around--DOH!!  He had some extra air conditioning going on--haha!  RIP shorts!
Aaron got a gift card to Texas Roadhouse for Father’s Day.  He used it last week.  He ordered a Chicken Fried Steak.  He didn’t realize it was so HUGE! It took up the entire plate!  He only got through a little bit and brought the rest home for the kids to split.  I still can’t believe how big that Chicken Fried Steak was!!
The morning that we went to the temple with Josh, Sarah and Daniel were able to be in the parade.  We dropped her off before we left for the temple.  Sarah was in the parade with her dance team:

Daniel got to be in the parade for youth council.  At the end of the parade he also got to ride in a limo for fun.  Here’s the limo:
Here’s Daniel and some other youth council members having a fun time riding in a limo:
It was our city days celebration.  That is why there was a parade.  There was also a photography contest.  Josh, Daniel and I decided to enter just for a fun family competition.  Here’s the three submissions from Josh:
Here’s the three submissions from Daniel:
Here’s my submissions:
Wahoo Daniel got 3rd place:
I got second place:
The loser had to buy the winners a soda.  Josh ended up getting Daniel and me a can of rootbeer.  Yum!

Josh got set apart as a missionary yesterday.  I cried a little, but I am excited for him.  I still can’t believe it has come so soon!!  Here’s the newest missionary:

He was up at 6 am this morning to exercise.  Then after getting ready he started his online classes.  I sneaked in to catch this picture:
I love my missionary!!  He has had a few breaks throughout the day so I have been able to check in to see how he is doing.  It was fun to share lunch with him!  He has six weeks of Home MTC then he will fly out to Chicago!!

Josh had mentioned he wanted to take some missionary pictures before he got set apart.  We did that Saturday afternoon.  I had fun taking his pictures!  Some of these haven’t been edited, yet, but I liked how they turned out!!

Chicago, Illinois flag:

He had to do a ’smolder’ picture because he is a dork--haha!

We love our missionary!!
