We have been busy these past few weeks. I will try and do a Reader's Digest version to catch up the blog. Last Saturday we took Josh in to get his eyes retested. It was a good thing, too. They had changed quite a bit. After the eye exam he definitely needed new glasses, but when we started looking for some the cheapest frames we could find were $129 and that did not include the lenses!! I am new to this glasses thing because I have never worn them and still don't need them. Glasses are expensive!!! Thankfully I was referred to a website with cheaper glasses and that's what we ended up ordering from. Hopefully they will come in soon so Josh will be able to actually start seeing things more clearly!!
I have started Josh and Daniel's other mural in their bedroom. I still have quite a bit left to do. I try to work on it while the older kids are in school, but it is hard to paint and keep a close eye on the youngest two. I do my best, but I had a complete parent FAIL last week. As I was painting Sarah told me she had to potty and quickly ran into the boys bathroom to go potty. Well I was busy painting and didn't notice that Noah snuck out of the room, too. As I was painting it got a little too quiet if you know what I mean. I went to search them down to see what they were doing. I didn't have to go far. They were both in the boys' bathroom. They had gotten a hold of the boys' toothbrushes and were brushing their teeth with them. The bad thing was they were using the toilet water to wet down their brushes. Now that's disgusting, but even more disgusting is using the boys' nasty bathroom--YUCK!! GAG!!NASTY!!! Why are kids so disgusting?!?! I had to go out and get a round of all new toothbrushes for everyone. GROSS!!
Two Saturdays ago instead of doing something fun we decided to clean out the garage. Matthew was quite upset and kept asking us when we were going to do something fun. He just couldn't imagine a Saturday without going somewhere fun--I think the kids have been a little spoiled don't you?! Anyway after much fighting and arguing oh I mean discussion the garage is finally clean....for now anyway. The kids (and Aaron) aren't the best at putting stuff away so we will see how long it stays clean. As evidence of one of our 'discussions' about where to put the fertilizer spreader, it ended up getting put up really high on the wall. It has now become one of those things of 'don't ask don't tell' about why it is up so high.... Good thing I love my husband!! I figure we are still together after that so we must have a strong marriage ;).
Sarah learned about butterflies at preschool the other day. When she got into the car afterward she was telling us that butterflies are called that because they eat butter. No amount of arguing with her was going to change her mind so as of then butterflies eat butter case closed!! Also for Josh's birthday Aaron woke up early and bought ten helium balloons for Josh to wake up to. What a nice DAD!! Anyway, Josh was so excited to see them the morning of his birthday. He was excited to see all the balloons filled with 'Helaman'. I giggled when he said that and asked him if they were really filled with Helaman which he told me yes!! Those are some pretty righteous balloons!! Speaking of Josh Aaron, me, Sarah and Noah went and had lunch with Josh that day. He was pretty excited to see us at school with a hamburger for him. We had a nice short lunch and then Josh was ready to go out to recess and play. I am glad he still thinks his family is fun--who knows how much longer that will last?!
Matthew's birthday is in August so he is out of school for summer break by the time his birthday rolls around. However, he came home last week insisting that he needed to bring treats to celebrate his birthday at school. The teacher had not passed this information on to me so I wasn't sure if it was real or if Matthew just decided he needed to bring treats himself. I emailed the teacher, but didn't hear back. Matthew was pretty insistent and wasn't going to take no for an answer. I figured why not so I sent him with some treats to school hoping that the teacher really knew what was going on because I didn't even though Matthew seemed to. Thankfully, the teacher finally emailed me back the next day saying that they were celebrating Matthew's unbirthday and that bringing treats was fine. Phew!! You just never know with Matthew....
Speaking of Matthew he is pretty excitable. He gets so excited whenever our neighbor, the train engineer, or his wife come out of their house. Matthew will yell, "HI!!" and then will run over to chit chat with them. Our neighbors seem pretty relaxed about it, thankfully. Last Saturday, though, our neighbor made Matthew's day. He gave him a Union Pacific lantern and a fluorescent vest to wear just like the train engineers. Matthew was so excited he took the gifts and then ran home to show us. He was jumping all around for the next hour because he was so excited. The next day Matthew was outside giving 'train rides' using the red wagon to the neighbor kids wearing his jacket, new Union Pacific vest with his Union Pacific hat. He is an official train engineer. Also by celebrating his unbirthday must have inspired Matthew because Matthew came inside a few days ago telling me that he just finished talking to our neighbors. He then told me that he made sure to tell Bryan, our neighbor, that his birthday was August 6th so Bryan could be sure and get him a present. Oh dear...hopefully our neighbor will take that in stride....Gotta love Matthew!
Noah has started falling asleep in his room wherever he gets tired. When I take him to his room at bedtime I tuck him in his bed, but invariably his toys beckon him out of bed. He plays in his room until he finally gets tired enough to sleep anywhere. This particular night he decided his closet would be his resting place. I guess pulling his clothes off his shelves was pretty hard work. Every night it is somewhere different in his room. What a crazy kid!!
Noah has found a great hiding place--our closet. Whenever he gets caught doing something bad or when it is bedtime he usually will take off and I will find him in here. You can see it is a pretty good place--he is in the very center of the picture behind the bottom clothes rod.It was a good place the first few times, but now that is the first place I look. Our closet is a little on the unorganized side so you can tell it is a pretty good hiding place.
Sarah got this tiara at a birthday party awhile back, but she still loves wearing it. I had just done her hair and she insisted on putting it in. What can you do--a princess always needs her crown!!
Daniel has been doing so well keeping his asthma under control these past few years. However, he had a major attack and I mean MAJOR attack last Sunday night. I had given him a few nebulizer breathing treatments and a Benadryl just in case he had gotten exposed to any allergen. As the night went on he got worse and worse. After a breathing treatment he felt a little better so he went and laid down. About two hours later he came upstairs really agitated and wheezing something fierce. I immediately gave him another breathing treatment and we set off to the after hours clinic who, thankfully, got us right in. They checked his oxygen saturations and they were 84% which is usually immediate hospitalization. However, given Daniel's asthma history the doctor gave him another nebulizer breathing treatment and decided to give him a steroid shot. When Daniel heard he was getting a shot he got very angry. As the doctor was closing our room door, Daniel turned to me and screamed, "YOU MEAN TRAITOR!!" He yelled it so loud that I am sure the whole office heard. However, after another breathing treatment and shot his oxygen saturations came up to 88-89% so they decided to send us home with five days worth of steroid pills and as long as I kept a good eye on him. It also helps they know I am a nurse so they are a little more comfortable sending him home like that. Poor kid!! It took him a good four days to finally feel a lot better. We have not had an attack that bad for YEARS. It was pretty scary.
Of course the kids see me using my stethoscope to listen to Daniel so they knew what to do when they saw it laying out. Sarah was the doctor and Noah was the patient:
For Josh's birthday he got a model rocket. It has finally warmed up enough that we could launch it the other day. All the kids gathered around to watch. Unfortunately the first two launchings, the rocket never left the ground. Finally by the third launching three days and some modifications later it worked perfectly.
3-2-1 blastoff!!
Last Saturday Josh and Daniel's school hosted a fundraiser 5k fun run and 1k family walk/run. Josh brought home the flyer and as much as I tried to ignore it and hope Josh would forget about it, he didn't forget. He begged and begged every day to sign up. I grudgingly signed us all up because it was cheaper to sign our whole family up than it was to just sign Aaron and Josh up. I grumbled and grumbled about it, but Saturday morning we all went. Aaron had to clean the church building early Saturday morning so he took Josh and Daniel with him. When they were done he and Josh set off to do the 5k. An hour later I brought everyone else over to do the 1k family walk/run. Here's Sarah crossing the starting line. She did pretty well.
Matthew, Josh, Sarah and Daniel ran the whole 1k. Aaron and I walked/jogged because it was over grass and we still had Noah in the stroller. Here is our family after both races finished: I think Noah had the easiest time!
Afterward they had a big drawing for lots of prizes. I had no idea they were going to do that so we were excited when we found out. Daniel was the first number drawn. He got a nice kick ball. A few prizes later Matthew's number got chosen. He was so excited!! He ended up getting a t-shirt and a toothbrush/toothpaste kit. For the rest of the drawing he was still screaming about how excited he was about winning a prize. Towards the end my number got drawn (it really helps to have a big family at times like this!!) I ended up winning two free passes to the rock climbing wall in Ogden. Saweet!! However, when we got home Sarah burst into tears because she didn't win a prize. She cried and cried so Matthew gave her his toothbrush, but she still was upset because she didn't win it herself.
Finally she let Daddy console her. Aaron was loving it because he got to get Sarah bug loves for a long time.
In anticipation for the upcoming Spring that will hopefully come to stay soon, Aaron has been working on setting up the garden watering system. He brought it inside to do because it has been really cold lately. Of course he had lots of 'help' from Noah. Hopefully it will warm up soon because it is a little depressing when you get blizzard snow storms in April!!!
Tuesday it was time for Josh and Noah's well child appointments. I took Sarah along with us and headed to the doctor Tuesday morning. Josh is getting big and doing well. He is 79.2 pounds (73rd percentile) and is 59.5 inches (97th percentile) tall, but his BMI is only 30%. That all means he is a very tall, very skinny kid, but doing well.
Noah is 31.4 pounds (47th percentile) and 37.5 inches tall (53rd percentile). He is pretty much average which is great. I am also glad to say he is finally at age level and is not developmentally delayed any more. After visiting with the doctor we decided to start immunizations on Noah and continue Sarah's immunizations. That meant Noah got six shots and Sarah got five. They were NOT happy campers as the whole office could tell by all the wailing coming from our room after the shots were administered. I felt awful, but it really is the best thing for them. Afterward we went to get a treat to help soothe the pain. Ice cream hit the spot perfectly!!
Since it was Noah's 3rd birthday that means it was time for his annual Thyroid study IQ test. While I was pregnant with Noah my thyroid levels were low. They weren't low enough to treat, but they were on the low end of normal. It just so happens that the U of U were doing a study on pregnant women whose thyroid levels were reading on the low end of normal to see if lower thyroid levels in the mom resulted on lower IQs for the baby's. So every year around Noah's birthday I have to go down to the U of U to have Noah receive an IQ test. I went down two weeks ago. We went in the room and got started. Of course Noah was not wanting to do anything. The tester kept asking Noah questions that I know he knew, but Noah wouldn't answer him. Let me just say the tester wasn't very kid friendly, either, so that didn't help. It was frustrating to watch, but I wasn't supposed to help Noah answer the questions in any way. Noah started answering things by the end of the test, but they wouldn't go back and repeat the questions he refused to answer. I was glad when the test was over and that we don't have to worry about it for another year....
